Last Friday, May 25th 2018, a helicopter collided with a drone north of Lago Maggiore in the Swiss canton of Ticino. This is reported by various Swiss media. The helicopter was able to land safely at the nearby Locarno airport. After investigation by the Swiss Security Council, the driver of the drone was arrested.

The collision occurred about 500 meters above the Lago di Vogorno reservoir in the Valle Verzasca, at an altitude of about 1,000 meters above sea level. After the incident, the helicopter was able to safely return to the airport further away. There it was determined that one of the rotor blades had come into contact with a hard object. However, no blood traces were found, based on which a collision with a bird was ruled out.

Not long after the incident, the police managed to arrest the driver of the drone near the dam where the incident took place. It turned out to be a 42-year-old man from Switzerland. The Bundesamt für Zivilluftfahrt (BAZL) is investigating the incident further. It is still unclear whether it was a recreational or professional drone pilot.
